Type Locality and Naming

It was named by the Regional Survey Party of Hunan Province in 1972. The naming section is located in the Dahupo area of Luyang, Huaihua County, Hunan Province.

Synonym: (打虎坡组)


Lithology and Thickness

Its basal and lower parts represent alternating layers of grey-green argillaceous siltstone with purple silty mudstone; while its Middle and Upper parts represent alternating layers of grey-white feldspar-quartz sandstone and siltstone with purple sandy mudstone. It is of 261 m in thickness.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is in a conformable contact with the underlying Longqiao Fm

Upper contact

Regionally, the schematic strat column indicates the next younger unit as Luyang Fm

Regional extent

The formation is distributed mainly in the areas of Lufeng, Huaqiao, and Chenxi of Huaihua County; Feishan of Jingxian County; Yanjialing and Xiajiarong of Shimen County; and Jizhishan of Linli County in northwestern Hunan Province. In the Chenxi area it is about 181 m thick, and is thinning in the direction towards the Lingquan County and its vicinity to be of only 35 m in thickness; to the area of Feishan of Jingxian County it is about 174 m thick. It is wanting in the Zhijiang and Mayang areas.

Fossils

It yields bivalves as represented by the Qiyangia-Hunanella assemblage; gastropods Pseudotritanicum sp., and Amauropsis sp.; ostracods Darwinula giganimpudica, D. lufengensis, Naevicythere hunanensis, N. longa, Metacypris parva; and fish teeth Ceratodus szechuanensis.


Age 

Schematic strat column in previous "red Chinese Lexicon" had implied that the Dahupo Fm spanned the Aalenian.
